Installing Software

There are 3 types of software files that you can install on the smart phone: CAB, EXE or ZIP files.

CAB
Cab files are compressed installation files. To install these do the following:

- Active Sync your phone (make sure it is connected to your PC)
- Copy the CAB file to \IPSM\Windows\Start Menu (This can be found in my computer > mobile device)
- On your phone click 'programs'.
- Look for the CAB file you just copied and select it. The installation process will now start.
- Select whether you wish to install it on the phone or Card (better option if you have space)!
- That's it!

EXE
EXE files are executable files. These must be run from the PC. To install these do the following:

- Active Sync your phone (make sure it is connected to your PC)
- Run the EXE file from your PC and the installation process will start,
- When prompted on the phone/pc, select whether you wish to install it on the phone or Card (better option if you have space)!
- That's it!

ZIP
ZIP files are compressed PC files. These must be run from the PC. To install these do the following:

- Active Sync your phone (make sure it is connected to your PC)
- Unzip the file. (Need winzip for this - PC utility) Download this from www.winzip.com (PC only website),
- Install winzip and unzip the file. This can be done by right-clicking on the file and selecting 'unzip to....',
- The the file you have just unzipped will be in its true format, i.e, either CAB or EXE. See above on instaructions on how to install these.

\IPSM\Windows\Startup\

Add a WAV file in here. Now switch the phone off and on - you should now have a start up sound!! ;)

Back Drops

In order to add your your own back ground pictures read on...

Change the backdrop by using ActiveSync, then explore to..

"My SmartPhone"
"IPSM"
"Application Data"
"Home"

Then copy your own files in.

Want to make your own back grounds then copy the Jpeg to the location above but ensure that:

1) The picture brightness is increased

2) The picture is 176x200 (width 176, height 200)(Note - adjust the height to 180 if you don't want it obstructed by the menu bar!)

3) It's a JPG!

Skins

These skins have been very popular amongst fellow smart phoner's. They are basically web pages that know where to place the time, sms messages, date, etc, Thus creating a homepage for your phone.

Hard Reset

In order to reset your phone and restore it to as it was when you first got it, simply follow the instructions below:

Please Note: You will loose the following data:

-
Your text messages, MMS and Emails
- Your XML layouts / Skins / Sounds / Camera pictures
- Contacts, Tasks, Calendar

Do try and Sync all your contacts/mails/tasks etc first. It might be worth mentioning that in order to do a hardware reset you must have the SD/MMC card in the phone.
Use Orange Backup too to save and restore other bits.

1) Remove the battery and wait 5 seconds. Replace the battery

2) Press and Hold voice recorder button (below power button on the left)

3) Power-on the device

4) The device will enter a special power-up mode

5) "Card found" will be displayed on the screen

6) Shortly after you will receive two options:

"Press any key to enter boot loader"
"Press action button to enter diag mod"

7) Press and hold the Action button

8) After a few seconds a menu will be displayed

9) Select "Erase IPSM" and wait for the screen to display "PASSED"

10) Then move to the left with the navigation button and select "END"

11) A screen with three colors will be displayed

You may now remove and replace the battery and perform a normal power up. :)

(Note: This may take several minutes)

1) This one is brilliant, and can be overlooked easily. It's simple - hit the "Power Button" once and scroll down (you may have to choose "more" to "Automatic". This mode will choose between Normal profile and "Meeting" when the Calendar states you are busy.

2) Again, in the profiles list - choose "Headset" and edit it - you can choose for the phone to Auto-Answer in a set amount of seconds. Again, this is fantastic if you're out jogging and can't get your hand in your pocket to answer the call in time!

3) Want to check for updates or listen to streaming radio ? Worried about GPRS costs ? Well, don't use it - put the phone in the cradle, then "piggy-back" the Internet Connection on your PC. You can then use your anytime or broadband connection.

4) Lost your number ? Forgotten what it was? Use the SIM manager to find out.

Update your Phone

It is essential that you systematically update your phone thus enabling any updates and optimizing the phones performance.
There has only been 1 Update for the SPV. Download it below...

Speed up your phone
After a while you may notice that the SPV slows down. This can be especially apparent in the Inbox. As a general rule, you should check the amount of free space left on the phone by going into ....

Programs->Settings->About

This should tell you how much space is left on the phone.

Here's some useful tips to increase the speed of the phone.

1) Keep the amount of phone space free to a maximum. Install software on the SD card and NOT the phone where possible. You need to investigate memory cards, so check this page out.

2)
Remove any old programs / games / utilities that may no longer be needed by going to..

Programs -> Settings -> More.. -> Remove Programs

3) Remove ALL contents from the MAPI folder on your phone. This folder contains the body texts of SMS & e-mails. I've no idea where the headers are stored or how the messaging folder structure is applied 'cause MAPI has sent, received & deleted
messages in it. Anyway. ActiveSync your phone with your PC then browse to ....

IPSM\MAPI

Delete everything in here, then delete everything in the ATTACHMENTS folder. If you want to be "careful" then cut 'n paste the contents to your PC first (then you can paste them back if you lose an important message etc..)

This should free up lots of space on your phone and increase the speed back to what it was when you first took the SPV out of the box!!

4) Go to ...

Programs -> Settings -> Sounds

Scroll down to "Keypad control" and select "None" from the list of sounds. This should stop the phone going "beep" every time you navigate anywhere, and will speed it up no
end! :)

5) Turn Multipress time out to 1/2 second in ...

Programs->Settings->Accessibility

Movies

There are a few ways you can currently watch  movies. These are via three players:

Pocket TV - For Mpeg files Download
Media Player - For Wmv files
DivX - For Divx files Download Download

If you want to make your own movies, it is essential that you rip the videos and convert them into the correct formats.

First you need a converter. Grab it here.

Use the following settings for Windows Media Player:

Settings:
Maximum bit rate:
70kB
Audio Codec: Windows media audio V8
